Things To Do
You are invited on a walking tour of the oasis to experience firsthand its geology and
natural history. You meet in the library where Pat Flanagan, our naturalist, begins with
aerial images and maps to locate us (we are visible from space) before strolling the
grounds to learn about the palm oasis and desert plants and animals. The history of the
Serrano and Chemehuevi who lived here, the pond and garden are all part of the story.

Explore Joshua Tree National Park
Explore nearly 800,000 acres of some of the most fascinating geology found in the
California desert. Rugged mountains of twisted rock and exposed granite monoliths
testify to the tremendous earth forces that shaped and formed this land. Enjoy rock
climbing, hiking, camping, birding, star gazing and an incredible landscape nature
We suggest that everyone begin their tour at the Joshua Tree National Park Oasis
Visitors Center which is a short walk from the 29 Palms Inn and open daily from 8am to
5pm. You’ll have the chance to chat with Park Staff who will provide you with current
information about conditions and help you plan your visit through the park.
If you have a few hours or less:
With limited time you’ll likely want to stay
on the main park roads where you’ll be able
to stop at one of many pullouts that have
wayside exhibits. There are a variety of
short walks and nature trails you can visit
during a short trip into the park, many of
which are less than 1 mile loops. Check out
The 29 Palms Creative Center & Gallery offers a wide variety of art classes and
activities for children, adults and groups. The gallery is open to the public and is an
excellent place to shop for a gift or keepsake of any size. The Creative Center is located
on the West End of the property here at the Inn.
Activities and art classes to choose from include: painting pottery, the potter’s wheel,
hand building clay creatures, stained glass, tile mosaic, bookmaking, printing on the
etching press, painting with acrylic, oil & encaustic paints, plus collaging on canvas or
prints. The Creative Center is also a great place for art parties - plan an art party for
any occasion with your host Gretchen Grunt.
Take advantage of a wide range of programs that include educational adventures,
seminars, family programs and courses on hiking, survival skills, creative arts in the park,
natural science and cultural history. These courses enable participants to experience the
park in an engaging way alongside expert instructors who provide a personal and fun

If you plan to spend an entire day:
Over the course of a full day in the park
you’ll have the chance to walk a few nature
trails or explore some of the longer hiking
trails that range from 3 miles to 16 miles. Be
sure to check out the schedule online to see
which are fun, interactive, and help you get
the most out of your park visit.

12th Annual Spring Festival, May 15-18th 2014
This 3 day cultural festival celebrates more than just
live music! You'll find ongoing yoga classes, a world
market, visual art exhibits, an astronomy theater and a
kidsville area (children under 10 get in free) so bring the
whole family. Takes places at the Joshua Tree Lake
Campground, weekend passes can be purchases as well
as single day tickets.

The Tramp & The Roughrider:
An afternoon with John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt
3:00pm, Sunday April 27th 2014 at the 29 Palms Inn
Imagine stepping back in time to the early 1900's and
meeting naturalist John Muir and President Theodore
Roosevelt as they sit by a campfire in the Yosemite
wilderness, talking about preserving the western
forests and creating national parks for future
generations. Join actors Lee Stetson as Muir and Alan
Sutterfield as Roosevelt as they portray these
