Join the National Parks Conservation Association’s Seth Shteir for an exploration of the 1964 Wilderness Act. Learn about the history of one of America’s most important environmental laws and what makes federally designated wilderness special. Find out how this bill, like many others, was forger on the anvil of compromise. Come prepared to share your definition of wilderness and what makes wilderness special to you!

Seth Shteir works in Joshua Tree as the National Parks Conservations Association’s California Desert Field Representative. Seth developed a love of arid lands while visiting Arizona’s national parks as a child with his father. Clambering up saguaro strewn slopes, observing iridescent hummingbirds and surprising coatamundis in a desert was instilled a desire to protect special places. Seth’s environment writing has appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines, including The Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, National Parks Magazine and Bird Watcher’s Digest. He is especially fond of the wildlife, starry skies and compelling geological formations of the Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park.

This event is presented by the 29 Palms Inn for the benefit of Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts.
