Dark Desert Night Skies

It is estimated that only around 10 percent of the US population are able to see the night sky in its natural, unpolluted state. We are some of the fortunate few here in California's high desert to have such dark night skies and be able to enjoy such incredible star gazing opportunities!

Even more fortunate are we to have the Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center, located just outside of the north entrance to Joshua Tree National Park here in Twentynine Palms California. This non-profit organization is dedicated to providing hands-on learning opportunities for the community and visitors to Joshua Tree National Park. They have put together a great lineup of free events and evening observing sessions that run on Saturday evenings throughout the year.

Here are the details for next few Sky’s The Limit upcoming events, be sure to visit their website for the full schedule.

Sky's The Limit Saturday, March 21st, 2015.

The event will start at approximately 7:40pm and end at midnight.

Celestial Highlights: The winter Milky Way is easily seen from our dark-sky site, although it’s not as bright as its summer counterpart. It hosts some of the brightest clusters and nebulae in the sky, highlighted by the Great Orion Nebula. Also on view are several distant galaxies and the dazzling planet Jupiter.

Sky's The Limit  Saturday, March 28th2015.

The event will start at approximately 7:45pm and end at 12:30am.

First Quarter Moon & Jupiter: The first quarter Moon will be just west of Jupiter, looking overhead. These two fascinating objects are tonight’s primary exhibits. The bright moon will interfere with deep sky viewing, but several colorful double stars will also be on display.
